Tips for Buying Your First Luxe Item

Hi friends,

This weekend I bought my first luxe investment item, and I’m really excited about it!

I think there’s a misconception that fashion bloggers have endless amounts of money and luxury bags/shoes, but most of us are just shopping addicts looking to find and share great deals like everyone else.

I saved up for a while and thought for a long time about what my first big “treat yoself” purchase should be, and when it should happen.

After sharing my beautiful new YSL purse on my Instagram, I found that several of my followers are currently trying to decide on which piece they want to be their first luxe buy.

Below are some tips for what to consider before making a large purchase.

I hope these help you to plan out a perfect first big buy that you’ll be happy with for years to come! 🙂

1. Do your research
Before deciding what to buy, I browsed luxe brand websites for a long time.

I had my choice narrowed down a purse from one of my favorite designer brands: YSL, Alexander McQueen, Gucci, or Valentino Garavani, but I wasn’t sure exactly what item I wanted to get.

After looking through what was available and how everything was priced, I decided on a YSL purse and went to the store with three different bags screenshotted on my phone.

I’m so glad I looked online beforehand, because the bags on display were not all the same color options that were shown on the site.

It wasn’t until I showed the screenshot to the woman helping me that she went into the back and pulled out the bag of my dreams; if I hadn’t shopped around beforehand, I never would’ve known about that color option since it wasn’t out on the shelves.

2. See it in person
If you can, I’d definitely recommend going to buy your new item live; especially if you’re having trouble choosing between multiple options.

Seeing a bag or pair of shoes in person is way different than seeing it online, because you’ll find out how it looks on your own body, what the fit and size are like, and you’ll know exactly what shade the color is.

Seeing pictures of something online, and on a model who may have a different body type, can be a bit misleading.

The color of something may look a little different on a computer screen than it does in person, so going to see it for yourself is the best way to know exactly what you’re buying and to make sure you’re 100% happy with it.

It’s also just a cool experience going into a luxe store, having someone help you find the perfect item, and then taking it home with you that same day.

3. Buy from a trusted retailer
You’re going to be spending a big sum of money, and while it can be tempting to just type the designer and item name into Google Shopping and click one of the majorly discounted prices listed, that may not be the best idea.

I absolutely love sites like RueLaLa and others with frequent flash sales on luxe items, but make sure you read the fine print as some of these sites sell pre-owned or damaged and defective items with no opportunity to return after buying them.

When it came to my first big investment purchase, I decided to play it safe and buy the bag from a trusted department store like Nordstrom or from the designer retail store itself.

I ended up going to the Saint Laurent store at the Short Hills Mall (less than 20 min from my new future home…equally exciting and dangerous) and am so glad I did.

I got to see such a large selection of items and hold them in my hands before making my decision.

I also got my new purse wrapped up, boxed, and got some care tips (and super nice compliments on my dress!) from the sales woman who helped me purchase it.

4. Don’t settle
Just as it’s tempting to buy bags from discounted websites, it’s also tempting to buy the cheapest item available as long as it has the designer’s logo on it.

Mini and super mini size bags are the latest trend, and when I first started browsing online I was pleasantly surprised to see beautiful bags from my favorite designers for $1,000 or less.

Upon further inspection, I noticed that these bags were much smaller than I thought when first seeing their pictures.

Even though the smaller bags didn’t seem as functional or attractive to me, I heavily considered buying them rather than the larger options so that I wouldn’t be spending as much.

I am not knocking the smaller bags and think they look great on the girls who I’ve seen wearing them, but I knew deep down that if I were to buy a smaller option, it would be purely to save money and wouldn’t be exactly what I wanted.

When it comes to making large purchases, to spend a little bit less and not be fully happy seems like a waste to me; I ended up spending a little more for the larger size but am so glad I did.

I also think that the bag I chose works much better for my personal style and what I’m looking for in a bag right now.

5. Buy what you love
Trends come and go, but if you’re going to spend your hard-earned money on something, please make sure it’s something you love and not something that you want just because everyone else has it.

I try to stay true to this with anything I buy, but it’s especially important when we’re talking about hundreds, or even thousands of dollars.

The bag that I chose is not the most popular style or color, but I fell in love with it online and then again when I saw it in person (my husband said my face actually lit up when they brought it out from the back…lol).

These pieces are expensive because they’re made to last, and if you treat your investment purchase right you should have it for a very long time.

It would be a shame to spend all that money on something just because it’s the “cool” thing to have at the moment, and then feel like it doesn’t have as much value when everyone else has moved onto the next big thing.

I’m not saying you should avoid trends, just that you should make sure you are staying true to your own personal taste; if you are in love with something that happens to be super popular right now, you should go for it!

At the end of the day, shopping and fashion are about self-expression, and you can’t go wrong if you decide to buy something that makes you feel happy and beautiful when wearing it. ❤

The Best Online Shopping Websites for Women

Happy Friday!

Yesterday I showed some of my favorite Spring shoes, but today I want to focus on where I actually buy the items I feature on this blog.

I’m pretty into online shopping (see my previous post for tips for saving money from a seasoned shopper like myself), and there are a lot of sites I frequently visit.

However, there are a few main favorites that I always go back to, and I want to share those with you today.

This post isn’t sponsored or anything like that, I just love these stores and want to give genuine recommendations to you all!

Tobi

Tobi is my go-to any time I need formal wear.

The dresses are inexpensive compared to other places, and they’re all so gorgeous and flattering!

I always get the most compliments when I’m wearing something from Tobi.

You can see some of my favorite dresses from them here, here, and here.

Lulus

I’ve posted my great finds from Lulus on the blog before, so you guys already know how much I love them.

Their clothes are so stylish, not too expensive, and are great quality.

They have great sales fairly often, too!

Saks Fifth Avenue

I used to steer clear of this store because I figured everything was crazy overpriced, but they actually have great deals on major designer pieces!

I typically only buy items on sale from Saks, but the quality of everything I buy there goes above and beyond.

Hautelook/Nordstrom Rack

Another store I’ve posted about previously, but Hautelook/Nordstrom Rack is another great option for buying luxe brands without having to pay a fortune.

They have new deals every day and they feature a lot of my favorite designers.

Some great finds I’ve gotten from them are here, here, and here.

There are a lot of other stores and websites where I like to shop, but I wanted to highlight a few that aren’t as well known and that carry unique items.

I’d love some suggestions from you guys for new places to browse, though!

Comment below to let me know where you score big when shopping, and thank you for reading my post!

Check back tomorrow for the next one in my April blogging challenge. ❤ 🙂

Smart (and Free!) Ways to Save Money While Online Shopping

Hi all,

So, this is probably no secret by now, but I have quite the passion for online shopping. I love finding new looks and am constantly browsing my favorite sites for new items.

Seeing those packages at my doorstep is always a pleasant surprise to come home to, especially when I get to do fun try-ons and share my finds with you all here and on my Instagram.

One of my absolute favorite parts about online shopping is finding great deals or other ways to save money, and any way that I’m able to save or find quality items for cheaper is a huge win in my eyes.

Since I do a lot of shopping and bargain hunting, I’ve discovered many great methods for saving, and sometimes even earning, extra money while I shop.

Here’s a list of my top online shopping hacks, and they’re all completely free!

1. Join Flash Sale Websites

There are a ton of websites out there that offer flash sales for top brands. Basically, they sell quality items that are overstocked or are no longer considered New Arrivals, for a fraction of the original price.

The sales typically last for a few days each, and these sites have a bunch of new sales going on every single day!

My top favorite flash sale sites are Hautelook (by Nordstrom), Saks Off 5th (by Saks 5th Avenue) and Ruelala.

These sites all offer frequently feature top expensive brands with large percentages off, and they all offer free shipping after a certain dollar amount is in your cart. Ruelala even offers free shipping for 365 days with a one-time purchase.

You do need to sign up for an account to purchase from the sites, but all 3 accounts are completely free to sign up for and use.

If you like to buy designer or higher-end merchandise but don’t want to pay a ridiculously high price, these sites are great for you.

Click any of these links to sign up for the sites: Hautelook, Saks Off 5th, Ruelala.

2. Use Cash Back Add-Ons

Have you ever heard of apps like Ebates or Honey? They are getting more popular but a lot of people still don’t know about these amazing tools that literally pay you to shop!

You download the apps either on your phone or as an add-on to your web browser (or both!) and, voila! You start to get cash back for your shopping.

When you navigate to a website, the Ebates or Honey add-on will ask you to “activate” whatever percentage of cash back is available for that site. Once you do that, cash back will be added to your account after you make a purchase.

It’s so easy, and I’ve already gotten back hundreds of dollars using these apps.

Sign up using my links and you can get a bonus $10 to start yourself off: Ebates, Honey.

3. Shop Around Before Buying

When I’m shopping, my goal isn’t just to get something on sale. It’s to get it for the absolute lowest price available.

So even if I see an item is on sale, I don’t stop there. I usually plug it into Google or another site to see if any other stores are offering lower prices.

I like using Google Shopping because not only does it show you the price of the item from multiple stores, it also shows results for different colors of that item are available.

Simply go to google.com/shopping and type in the name of the item you’re looking for.

It’s always better to be more specific, so try to copy and paste the exact name of the product from the original site if you can find it.

If you can’t find the original name, Google may include results for some similar products, but I’ve actually found items that I liked even better than the original that way!

4. Track Items Before You Buy

Sometimes there’s a bag or pair of shoes that I just have to have, but it isn’t on sale. Rather than buying it at full price, I decide to wait a little and see if the price goes down.

Price tracking apps are perfect for situations like this, because they keep track of your favorite items and notify you when things go on sale

There are a lot of apps like this, but Shoptagr and Lyst are two of the highest rated, and also happen to be two of my favorites.

Not only do they keep track your favorite items and stores for sales, they also help you find other places where the items are available! Never miss a sale, or have trouble finding a great item, again.

I hope the tips above help you save some money and become the savviest shopper you can be.
